Abstract

|
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by the bacillus Mycobaterium tuberculosis. Worldwide, TB is one of the top ten causes of death and the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent. The aim of this report was to review the World Health Organization¡¯s (WHO) Global Tuberculosis Report 2020. According to the report, in 2019, an estimated ten million (130 per 100,000 population) people were infected with TB worldwide and TB caused 1.42 million (18 per 100,000 population) deaths. The WHO¡¯s report presented data reported by 215 countries and territories. Among the 215 countries and territories, the Republic of Korea ranked 87th in TB incidence and 102nd in TB mortality. This marked the Republic of Korea as the OECD country with the highest incidence (59 per 100,000 population) and the second-highest TB mortality rate (4.0 per 100,000 population). To accelerate the goal of ending TB by 2030, the WHO recommended intensifying multisectoral action on the broader determinants of TB. Pursuant to the Republic of Korea¡¯s global commitment, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) implemented ¡°the Second National TB Control Plan, 2018-2022¡± and adopted strengthening measures on TB prevention and control.
